The next day Nick received a most unwelcome visit. He listened to his mother’s angry tirade before he rang for a footman and requested the man to find his wife and ask her to come to the study. Ten minutes later she appeared. She looked so tense he longed to hold her and comfort her but his mother had put him in a very difficult position that had to be cleared up. He was glad to see the militant sparkle in her eye when she curtseyed to the dowager. He knew his Isobel had spirit but it was good to see some evidence of it.
Lady Cardington sat in a chair drawn up in front of her son’s large desk. He leaned back at his ease but rose when his wife entered. “Ah, Isobel. Do sit down.”
He waited until the door had closed behind the footman before he seated himself again and spoke. “I fear my mother has brought complaints of insolence to me. She says you spoke disrespectfully of her in front of the servants in the kitchen.”
“Have you asked the staff?” Isobel demanded, the sparkle still well to the fore in her fine eyes.
“I’d rather not,” Nick replied, “though I will if it becomes necessary. Would you like to tell Isobel what you have just told me, Mother?”
He turned to his mother with a questioning lift of his eyebrow. She said, “Gladly,” though she didn’t turn to address Isobel directly. “In the kitchens, no less! I have never had reason to set foot in the kitchens since I arrived here, and she has been down twice! She informed all the servants she could muster that she was mistress now, and she’d take control. It was an appalling act of insolence, and I will not stand for it!”
In contrast to her mother-in-law, Isobel was deathly pale, although there was never much colour in her creamy skin. Nick thought she was paler, and suspected it was in anger. Why did this have to happen now? He’d increased his work on the rebuilding program, hastening workers, even taking a hand himself because he wanted to get Isobel out of this house, to somewhere they could be truly alone. That was why he hadn’t ordered the carriage for Duncan and Mariah. When he’d broached the subject to Duncan, he’d refused to allow his wife to leave without him and Nick couldn’t entirely blame him for that, knowing Mariah’s low boredom threshold and her ability to take any man who took her fancy, footman or duke. Up at daybreak, overseeing the work and only returning to the house for meals and sleep, he’d fallen into bed every night completely exhausted, only to rise early once more.
He might have to support his mother, if the accusation was true, and that would drive Isobel even further away. While he’d never been close to either of his parents, he had to admit that his mother had done a great deal for the family, both inside and outside the house.
